Thermoset Resins $459 Worldwide the current consumption of thermoset resins across the whole industrial spectrum amounts to 21.6 million tonnes. Industry growth rates are forecast to be in excess of 2.5% per annum. The worldwide industry is thriving and producing lightweight, high performance, high quality products for an ever-expanding range of markets. Thermosets include a wide range of materials: acrylics, alkyds, amino resins, bismaleimides, epoxy, furane, phenolics, polyimides, unsaturated polyesters, polyurethanes and vinyl esters. New materials are being developed such as cyanate esters, silicones and arylzene resins, together with hybrid resins. This report focuses on the most widely used materials with shorter sections on speciality resins. The applications of thermosets are many and varied. One of the primary uses is as the matrix in composite materials. Composites are now accepted as high performance engineering materials in many fields such as automotive, aerospace and marine. They are made using a range of techniques, which are outlined in this report, from autoclave moulding to resin transfer moulding. Key developments and trends are indicated here. Adhesives are another major application area for thermosets and progress has been rapid. For example, a few years ago adhesives were restricted to relatively low performance applications, while today the range of formulations makes it possible to assemble aircraft and automotive components. Construction is a major market. Resin consumption is difficult to estimate. However, available data can be extrapolated to obtain a feel for the market size. A large volume of thermosets is used in the coatings industry. This has undergone rapid change in recent years as manufacturers strive to reduce VOC emissions, by reducing the use of solvents and bringing in ultraviolet curing formulations. Recycling is another environmental issue that is being tackled by manufacturers. Thermoset materials are designed for a long lifetime and can therefore be difficult to break down. However, methods of re-use and recycling are available. Innovations in materials include the use of natural fibre reinforcement in composites and the application of biopolymers as the matrix materials. It is difficult to estimate the size of the thermoset industry in global regions and worldwide as many companies produce their own resin in-house and major suppliers are generally reluctant to issue figures. Analysis of Thermoset Materials, Precursors and Products $153 Thermosets comprise around 25% of world plastic consumption. The use of thermosets dates back over 100 years to the advent of phenolics. Today, a large range of different reactive chemicals is used in the synthesis of these resins. Common thermoset systems include phenol-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, resorcinol-formaldehyde, epoxy, polyurethane, polyalkyd , silicone, polyester, acrylic, furan and polyimide. A variety of additives are found in thermosets. Plasticiser-type compounds are used to promote flow in high viscosity compounds such as epoxy resins. Particulate fillers are used to reduce cost or improve properties and fibrous materials for increased strength and rigidity. Other additives include antidegradants, curing agents (hardeners and accelerators), flame retardants and lubricants. Thermosets are used in a wide range of applications from mouldings and composites to adhesives. Analysis of thermosets is carried out to determine the reasons for failure, for quality control, to measure residual monomer, to detect contaminants, to monitor the extent of cure and for deformulation. Materials based on thermosets present the analyst with considerable challenges due to their complexity and the wide range of polymer types and additives available. The author of this review has many years of experience in the Polymer Analysis division at Rapra Technology. He has a practical understanding of the usefulness and feasibility of the many techniques on offer to the chemist. Wet chemistry techniques were mainly used historically. One example is the spectrophotometric titration of epoxy groups using a halogen acid and 2,4-dinitrobenzene sulfonate as the chromophore. Spectroscopic techniques include infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet, nuclear magnetic resonance, atomic absorption, X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy. Chromatographic techniques include gas chromatography- mass spectrometry, HPLC, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, gel permeation chromatography, thin layer chromatography and supercritical fluid chromatography. Thermal techniques used to analyse thermosets include differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, thermal mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis and dielectric analysis. There are many other analytical techniques covered in this review, which describes their specific uses and even set up details for some analytical techniques. The references at the end of the report describe many specific instances of the analysis of thermoset materials published over the last 10 years.
