how hard/expensive is it to do a fixie conversion?

My grandpa is giving me this sweet vintage cruiser, and i have to admit i have fixie envy, i want one. I'd also like to learn more about bikes and bike repair, so i wanted to do the conversion myself, as a hobby, but realistically how hard will it be for me since i don't know much about bikes?

I agree with the previous answer. Keep the cruiser. You can still build a cheap and easy fixie. Go to eBay or Craigslist and find an old steel frame in your size. Strip that down and use that for your base. Go to Sheldon Brown's websites to get more info on what you'll need to get everything done. Sheldon is no longer with us but his websites are and they are the best single source for all things fixed.
