These inspiring gems display a sharpened six-rayed star which appears to glide and glisten magically across the outer layer of the gem when the gem is moved. This is due to an optical illusion known as "Asterism". The star is best perceivable when the ruby is seen in a single source of illumination like daylight or a direct focus.
Star-effect, or "asterism," is thanks to the density of little fibers called rutile. The stars spring from the light reflecting from needle-like inclusions of rutile aligned vertical to the rays of the star. Since rutile is continually present in star rubies, they're never absolutely clear. The star ruby is one of the few precious stones which need inclusions, or imperfections, in order to attain their valuable status.
Star rubies are remarkably rare. Worldwide production today is yielding a minute quantity of fine stars, especially in sizes above 5 carats. Today, out of each a hundred coarse rubies mined, only 3 will have stars plain after being cut into cabochons. Out of these 3, one will have a poor color but a good star, one will have a poor star but a good color and a single out of hundred will have both a good star and a good color! Most original sources of star rubies like Mogok, Burma have totally run right out of supplies.
Outside the scarceness and sweetness of these gems, star rubies are generally believed to hold magical powers. The healing powers of gems have been debated since traditional times by healers, shamans and medication men. Traditionally, star rubies were worn by knights in the battlegrounds to protect themselves from danger. Folklore from Karnataka, India says that if a warrior wears a star ruby as a pendant or headband, then his enemy loses half his bravado! The power of the star ruby is purported to be the highest during full moon. Legend has it the star ruby is to ignite internal strength, ward off tensions, quiet the mind, and drive away stress related issues like headache, sleeplessness, and hysteria.
