Star Rubies

These electrifying gems display a sharpened six-rayed star which appears to glide and glisten magically across the surface layer of the gem when the gem is moved. This is due to an optical illusion known as "Asterism". The star is best perceivable when the ruby is seen in one source of illumination like light or a direct focus.
Star-effect, or "asterism," is due to the density of tiny fibers called rutile. The stars spring from the light reflecting from needle-like inclusions of rutile aligned vertical to the rays of the star. Since rutile is consistently present in star rubies, they are never absolutely clear. The star ruby is one of the few dear stones which need inclusions, or imperfections, in order to attain their valuable status.
Star rubies are extraordinarily rare. Worldwide production today is yielding a minute quantity of fine stars, particularly in sizes above five carats. Today, out of each 100 coarse rubies mined, only three will have stars obvious after being cut into cabochons. Out of these three, one will have a poor color but a good star, one will have a poor star but a good color and only one out of hundred will have both a good star and a good color! Most original sources of star rubies like Mogok, Burma have completely run right out of supplies.
Beyond the rarity and sweetness of these gems, star rubies are thought to hold magical powers. The healing powers of gems have been debated since traditional times by healers, shamans and medicine men. Traditionally, star rubies were worn by knights in the battlefields to guard themselves from danger. Folklore from Karnataka, India claims that if a warrior wears a star ruby as a pendant or headband, then his opponent loses half his bravery! The power of the star ruby is alleged to be the highest during full moon. Legend has it that the star ruby is to ignite internal strength, ward off tensions, quiet the mind, and drive away stress related issues like headache, sleeping problems, and hysteria.
