I always hear people at work saying they claim there new pre owned vehicles when filing taxes?

I always hear people at work saying they claim there new pre owned vehicles when filing taxes? I always see where you can claim brand new vehicles but not preowned.. Is this possible and if so what method are they using? Are they itemizing all there expenses? Never have itemized but believe that works off percent of what you gross is correct? I suspect that they claim the sales taxes as a deduction on their federal return. In states that don't have an income tax, taxpayers can claim the sales tax as a deduction. However, you need at least $5,700 in total deductions ($11,400 if married filing jointly) for it to save you on taxes.

Therefore if someone has a mortgage, they can deduct the interest paid on that, also property taxes, car registration fee, medical bills above a certain amount, donations, the sales or state income tax, and a few other deductions. If all of that exceeds the standard deduction, you can save a few bucks on your taxes. Commuting to and from work is not considered a business expense.

There has never been a time that you could deduct the cost of a car (new or used) on your tax return. However some people can deduct expenses above a certain amount for their car that is used for business purposes or a certain amount per mile but only the portion that is used for business.
