Why were the designers on Project Runway all wearing yellow ribbons this week?

In this last weeks episode (Nature Calls) all of the designers are wearing a yellow ribbon when they are in the workroom. Jerell had it tied around his hat brim. Kinley had it tied around her ponytail. Kato had hers on as a chocker necklace. Leann was wearing hers as a headband.

Any ideas?
I get that the yellow ribbon supports troops. What I don't get is why they haven't paid homage to this cliche until now. Yellow ribbons also have stood for things like Lance Armstrong's LIVESTRONG campaign and also to symbolize prostate cancer survivors. It was just odd that the ribbons sudden appeared this week, which prompted me to post the question.

I would assume its troop support, that's what most people mean to symbolize with a yellow ribbon.
