Getting A Cat To Use Its Litter Box
The problem of how to stop a cat from urinating in the house is one that virtually all cat owners have to deal with eventually. My wife and I have volunteered for a cat rescue organisation for many years and share our rural cottage with fourteen cats. We, as you might have guessed, have had to deal with more than a few cat urination problems from time to time.
Hopefully you will have had your cat spayed or neutered. Spaying or neutering your cat will not only much reduce its tendency to spray or mark but will improve its health and life expectancy.
The first thing to do when a cat starts urinating outside of the litter tray is to take it to the vet. A urinary blockage can be fatal if not dealt with very quickly and male cats in particular are very vulnerable to urinary tract blockages. We count ourselves lucky to have discovered this rapidly when our own tom cat, Lerone, developed this problem aged two. Urgency really is vital in these instances.
Any change in the house - even something as seemingly trivial as a change of carpet or furniture - can upset a cat and cause it to start spraying or move it's toiletting location. Cats typically start spraying after the introduction of a new living being into the house - it need not be a cat - even a baby can really upset your cat and make it feel insecure. You should be diplomatic in introducing new cats to your home, initially keeping the newcomer separate from your existing housecats to let them get used to each other.
Litter tray problems are another big cause of inappropriate cat urination. Your cat's tray should not be too large or too small and must be positioned in an undisturbed area from which the cat can easily escape. Do not put a cat tray in a hallway or under the stairs for example. Some cats do not like covered trays because it blocks their escape routes. Cats also tend not to like scented litter. It is very important that you keep your cat's litter tray clean. The tray needs scooping every day and a thorough cleaning every three days. This should include the use of an enzyme based odour remover to take away any traces of cat waste. There should be as many trays as there are cats, plus one extra. You should clean them on a rotating basis to ensure there is always at least one fresh one available.
Nervousness - particularly caused by changes in furniture or new additions to your family can be countered effectively with preparations such as Bach's Flower Remedy and Feliway, both of which we have used with great success. If your cat has taken to peeing in a specific spot you can dissuade it by putting aluminium foil or double sided adhesive tape down or putting a food or biscuit bowl there. If the surface is absorbant, wash it with a 1:2 solution of white vinegar and water and finish off with enzyme odour remover. The enzymes utterly destroy the urine's molecules rather than dispersing them. Biological washing powder can have a similar effect. If you make the litter tray as appealing as possible and it's new peeing place as unappealing as you can, you should get the cat back to using the tray.
