What is the best way to build a grocery cable car for home use?
My house is set on an incline, and I usually feel pretty sorry for myself whenever I'm lugging home a trunkful of loot from the supermarket.
There's about 120 feet of steep walkway to be covered up to the house, all stairs.
How could I build a cable car or even a gondola to drag all that stuff up to the house without busting my back?
Sounds like you need two strong pulleys on very sturdy posts or the like at a nice height so that the basket is easy to load and unload.
You need to figure out an appropriate capacity or weight limit to shoot for. This will determine the size of the pulleys, the gauge of cable, and the type of anchorage used to support the pulleys.
Well you would loop the cable around both pulleys and then attach it together to make a complete loop. Use crimps to make loops and use a bolt together type connection that can be tightened or loosened. The basket will only move up and down so position this connector at the top of the loop to the side opposite your initial basket attaching.
Next you need a basket large enough and durable enough for the weight being carried. Attach cable to the basket in loops from corner to corner and attack the apex of the handle like loops to the overhead cable using clamp connectors. (you can find appropriate connecting devices at the hardware store like Home Depot).
To balance the basket one loop will be longer than the other so the basket sits level on the consistent incline. You may need a spacer between the two attack points on the overhead to help support the desire for the back loop to slide forward. Pictures would make this easier to explain...
Ok so next we need a driver, and probably an anti fall device... (don't want any mishaps to send 100 lbs of groceries flying down the hill into who or what...)
I imagine a driver pulley be supported with a bracket to offset it from the support post... I think you would loop the cable around it, maybe set it up like a serpentine belt in a car. so the force of the tight cable wrapped around the drive pulley causes the grip that moves it.
You would need to seriously trust your mounting methods on the pulleys and brackets and check the tension often enough to avoid malfunction which could be dangerous.
I think the easiest way to cheaply provide driving force would be with a single boat lift motor. They can be left outside, but aren't cheap.
Or you could buy a 400 dollar superhawg from Milwalkee and plug it into an extension cord with a socket adapter in the chuck. Create some kind of make shift cradle for it. Pull the trigger to raise the basket up. If it's too much weight the drill will move slow, or blow the breaker. But the superhawg is a 1hp drill. which should lift 1000 lbs.
Keep it inside and it should only take a minute to put it in place to use each time you need it. And you might be able to take advantage of the higher speed setting on the drill. As far as socket adapter, I mean a 6 or 12 point socket sized to the bolt or nut on the driver pulley.
Make some kind of stopper at the top and bottom (maybe the connector will serve this function if it doesn't damage the pulleys by running into them) and make it so that you can just let the empty cart down.
Maybe you can also make a crank handle for lowering it slowly (putting things in the car) and raising it when it's empty.
Or make something to put friction on one of the pulleys, that can be used like a brake, or speed control when lowering freely.
Wonder how expensive it would be for the materials to create a hydrolic lifting device...
