The local art center has their gallery director as a working artist. Since 1970 this hempfield township resident has been active at the local art club, she majored in art from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania after discovering her talent in high school. She paints a pastel portrait while explaining her technique from an enlarged photocopy of a photo that was clicked during the fall at Slippery Rock. To prevent anything from being covered by the frame, she does not draw to the edge of the paper. By painting on the wrong side of the pastel sheet that has low textures, she is able to use her technique of layering in colors. She uses the blue and red hues to evoke dark logs and branches rising from the water. By adding bits of red not visible on the photograph she is able to put emphasis on certain parts of her painting. You cannot get any closer to using pure pigment than using pastels, and she utilizes this fact carefully.
She says that at certain times you should ponder over the color values. Using too much light too soon is not a good idea. In pastel painting, you can always layer lighter values over the darker ones, and you don't have to worry about conserving the white areas like in watercolor. Feeling your way with the pastels is important.
A good degree of caution should be put into place when using the color ranges. An advantage enjoyed today is the possibility of enough colors to find the right one without having to mix different shades. If the artist is not satisfied with the result, he can wipe the color off and start over again when using pastels. This medium is easy to work with.
