Fun Suggestions For Decking Out Your Apartment In Hollywood Regency Chic
One can’t think of the words “glamour’ and “glamorous” without thinking of Hollywood, or of a younger Lauren Bacall in a white silk swing dress with the signature massive shoulder padding. This is because there is probably no other single place in the world where one can find so much that fascinates and excites than Hollywood. These days, another “Hollywood” that excites and oozes glamour is Hollywood Regency, an interior design style that has the market abuzz and agog. Billy Haines developed the style in the Thirties and was adhered to by such famous celebrities as Joan Crawford and Nancy Reagan who fell in love with Haine's good taste and boldness in mixing period styles and doing the "unthinkable". Consider the following tips should you want to glam up your drab apartment in the Hollywood Regency style.
Step 1 Raid your grandma's attic if your grandma just happens to reside in the Hollywood area.
Be on the lookout for anything that is interesting, like a candelabra in the distinct rococo style or a ceramic lamp shade with an equally ornate base. Don’t miss on small furnishings simply because they’re small. Chances are you will not see a 118 B.C. For instance, unexpected items can be used for cabinet pulls, like a Chinese medallion or Wu-Chu'n coins. Don’t pass up Grandma’s sheer fabrics. They are just as sought after as any period piece and can be very useful.
Step 2. Anything that looks as if you’ve traveled halfway across the world to get is okay.
But remember, do not overdo, and always maintain the glamour level. Always. Bali, for instance, has incredible wood carvings that ooze elegance anywhere. The same is true with rough African bench carved from solid wood, or an Egyptian wooden headrest that looks like it came from King Tut’s tomb.
Step 3 Steer clear of jumbo or oversized furniture.
Hollywood Regency trains the spotlight on people, not the furniture, so keep the furniture small and low-key. Under no circumstances should they begin to compete with guests for attention. Distinctly non-masculine curved legs, yes: big size, no.
Step 4 Combining period styles is acceptable as eclectic is en vogue. Feel free to have your dining set in ornate rococo side-by-side with wall tapestries or flowers wall art side-by-side real or faux bamboo poles. Similarly, feel free to have velvet drapes side-by-side wicker chairs, art-deco alongside Neo-Classical, Tiffany stained glass table lamp beside tree wall art.
Step 5 Use lacquer with gusto.
Lacquer that wicker chair. Give a lacquer finish to your Chippendale secretary. Use a lacquer finish on your Queen Anne dinette set.
Step 6 Do at least one decor in an outrageously grand manner.
Think about displaying large wall art or a floor-to-ceiling wall mural that is accentuated with gold Chinese characters against a mandarin red backdrop.
