What difference does the venue make in the asking price when selling antiques?

At my recent tag sale, a woman wanted to buy seven amethyst glass pieces (hand-blown bowl, 2 footed bowls, 2 candle holders, a large snifter and a large pitcher). I was asking $50 for the lot. She said that was way too much to pay at a tag sale and that's what she would expect to pay at dealer's or an antique shop. Now if the glass is worth that much, what difference does it make in the price whether she buys at a shop or a tag sale?

Because people have a "garage sale" expectation, i.e. at a garage or tag sale, the seller is looking to sell items dirt cheap to get rid of them. You're charging $50 for 7 pieces, that's a little over $7 an item. People don't expect to see much over a dollar at a garage sale. If you are asking a competitive price to an antique dealer, you are virtually saying "this is a business". If you are in the U.S. and engaging in this practice, you should be registered as a business, charging sales tax and reporting your "tag sale" revenue as income.
